How to Participate in the Irish 'Commission to Enquire into Child Abuse'
The procedure is that you get a request form and explanatory leaflet from the Commission (tel. 353 1 662 4444) and through the form make your request to participate. Clearly the more that you can verify in detail about the nature of the abuse that took place, the more valuable your personal testimony will be.
The Commission received written submissions during 1999 and so far it has held three public sessions, the first on June 29th, the second on July 20th and the third in August. These public sessions have been taken up with legal and procedural matters. The work of the Commission is being divided into two separate forums: one is totally confidential (allowing victims to describe their experiences away from the glare of publicity); the other is public and open to the institutions to make a defence. In completing a request form you specify which of the forums you wish to address. It is likely that the Commission will sit for another two years.
