"The Irish state was founded around a core foreign policy idea—the right of the Irish nation to have an independent state of its own and through that state to make a distinct mark in the world…Until the 1960s Irish people took it for granted that this was what the state was about." With this editorial statement, the journal has been launched on the world. We quote the view of Charles James O'Donnell: "Every nation, if it is to survive as a nation, must study its own history and have a foreign policy" (The Lordship of the World, 1924, p.145). Irish foreign policy is often the subject of media coverage in a slight and trivial way, and is rarely subject to meaningful analysis. intends to meet the need for a rigorous discussion of the history and practice of Irish foreign policy.
